This isn’t what I usually do, but seems to becoming a bit of a recent trend. Following last week’s trip to see Prisoner of Second Avenue, I made another trip to the theatre this weekend. Not a play this week, but a musical – Sister Act!
The intention was meant to be going to see Whoopi Goldberg as Mother Superior but unfortunately she had to go back to America as her mother had a stroke. So I was a bit disappointed, though wishing Whoppi’s mother all the best!
Despite no Whoopi, I’d been wanting to see Sister Act for a while. I love the movie and it’s hard not to start humming ‘Follow Him’ just thinking about the film. Sadly that, nor any of the movie songs, are in the musical. Didn’t stop it from being a fun show! Think my favourite bit was the chasing at the end of the musical – made me laugh!
Shame about Whoopi, but still plenty of laughs. Even with each funny line being repeated by the person behind me, about a second after it’s been said on stage.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (25/08/10)
There’s been a lot of Scott Pilgrim on here lately. That’s down to me trying to read the book before the film is released and then watching the film and having to write on here to add it to my 100 movies list.
Any who… It was awesome! Or should I say epic? Brilliant movie. I think having read the comic books didn’t necessarily make me enjoy it more, just enjoy it in a slightly different way to how the everyday Joe public would enjoy the movie.
It did follow the comics very closely. Well as closely as I can remember considering I’ve only read the books once through. It was all very close up until the final volume. But it was nice how the story of the film diverged from the comic and then towards the end, headed back to where the comics went.
The music was awesome. I’ve been listening to the soundtracks today on Spotify and will be buying them very soon. The score OST’s a very different one to what I’m used to listening to, but there are some really beautiful score pieces, like Love me some walking.
Great cast. Amazing action sequences – the fight scenes were just awesome! Just go see Scott Pilgrim today!

It’s been a while since I did a ‘proper’ Cafepress design. Sure I’ve done the odd one here and there with some bits of text and maybe something exciting, but I think this is the first one I put that little bit of extra effort into it. I think I had fun designing it!

As you can see it features a pineapple and a lovely quote from one of newest favourite TV shows, as of this year – Psych!
I think the quote’s ambiguous enough for it to be attractive for people who don’t necessarily know of Psych. I hope. I tried to make it a bit grungy/retro – not sure if that was totally successful, but I think it’s given it a bit more depth, rather than just using flat colours. I always like a bit of texture.
I’ve tried to do as many designs for all the different items as I can, but if I’ve missed one out you think I should add, let me know!
I am done! Done with Scott Pilgrim! Erm, not in the bad way, but just in the way that I’ve finished the books. As of yesterday at around 1:35pm. Well ahead of schedule. The schedule being me finishing before tomorrow evening when I will be seeing the film.
I think I need to read them all again (Which will entail me buying the books as I was lent/forced to read/borrowed them.) to just get everything to soak in a bit better. But after a one time read through I really, really enjoyed them. I think you could tell I was getting more into it; as I finished each novel I think I subconsciously found Scott Pilgrim trailers and found something new in it to see. Which in turn made me a tad more excited about the film.
So next step – buy the books for myself, watch the film and re-read the books. Maybe not in that order. Well, I’ll have to buy the books before I re-read them, so in that vague order.
Salt (20/08/10)
I think this film was being marketed as the female Bourne. Erm, not quite. It’s not as slick or well crafted as the Bourne films, far from it. The action’s not as ‘real’ and it’s just not comparable. However, saying that, Salt’s still an incredibly entertaining action flick. Some nice action sequences and a few explosions. The ‘twist’ I could see coming from the beginning of the film, but it didn’t hurt the film that it was that predictable. Angelina Jolie’s an awesome action actress. I reckon she’s the best action movie actress out there at the moment. The pace of the movie’s very good, there wasn’t a single moment where I felt like I could start drifting off and wondering where the film was going. It skips along very well to the end which leaves you feeling pretty satisfied.

Piranha 3D (21/08/10)
I feel as though I need to defend my rating of this film. The fact that I rated it so highly! Piranha 3D never claimed it was going to be the most thoughtful horror movie this year. It blatantly claimed it was going to be cheap, trashy with loads of blood and gore. All those boxes were definitely ticked! It’s one of the most entertaining horror films I’ve seen. Loads more laughs than you’d expect. There were some brilliant and imaginative death sequences. Some made me ‘OH!’ and others made me laugh out loud. The cast are brilliant too – great to see Christopher Lloyd go a bit Doc Brown! Go see it. With a big group of friends! The only thing that did disappoint was the 3D-ness. I was expecting more. There was the odd occassion where something would jump out of the screen, but there wasn’t enough.

Adventureland (22/08/10)
A nice little dramedy. Jesse Eiseberg’s good, Kristen Stewart didn’t completely annoy me. Though her portrayal of either annoyance, anger or being upset by ruffling her hair did start to annoy me slightly. The music was brilliant. Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig made me laugh. A nice little story. Nothing more to really add other than that. A good little film.

Yesterday I combined the high brow with the distinctly low brow. The high brow was going to the theatre to see The Prisoner of Second Avenue starring Jeff Goldblum at the Vaudeville Theatre. The low brow was following said theatre visit with a viewing of Piranha 3D.
The Prisoner of Second Avenue was so very, very funny. I can’t imagine anyone else in Jeff Goldblum’s role. He wsa all over the stage, in a good way. Some good comedy moments, very funny lines with funnier deliveries of said lines. Good supporting cast with some memorable characters. Very glad I went to see this ‘proper’ play.
Piranha 3D has a lot in common with The Prisoner of Second Avenue. It too had funny lines and a lot of funny moments. Overall it was just hysterically funny, in the stupidest of ways. No where near as intelligent as the theatre trip, but who needs intelligence when you have vicious piranhas onscreen? The gore was brilliant and there were some very unique death sequences.
Theatre and Piranhas = a very well entertained day!
