100 movies: Scott Pilgrim!

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (25/08/10)
There’s been a lot of Scott Pilgrim on here lately. That’s down to me trying to read the book before the film is released and then watching the film and having to write on here to add it to my 100 movies list.

Any who… It was awesome! Or should I say epic? Brilliant movie. I think having read the comic books didn’t necessarily make me enjoy it more, just enjoy it in a slightly different way to how the everyday Joe public would enjoy the movie.

It did follow the comics very closely. Well as closely as I can remember considering I’ve only read the books once through. It was all very close up until the final volume. But it was nice how the story of the film diverged from the comic and then towards the end, headed back to where the comics went.

The music was awesome. I’ve been listening to the soundtracks today on Spotify and will be buying them very soon. The score OST’s a very different one to what I’m used to listening to, but there are some really beautiful score pieces, like Love me some walking.

Great cast. Amazing action sequences – the fight scenes were just awesome! Just go see Scott Pilgrim today!

Side note: This was my 80th movie of the year and my 13th this month!

100 movies – A long overdue update

It’s been a long time since this blog has been updated let alone anymore movies being added. Never mind, playing catch up now!

Underdog May
Just a poor kids movie that I got suckered into watching due to boredom, a heat wave and a cute pup.
Rating: 1/5

Dan in Real Life May
I’m not a fan of Steve Carell. I appreciate that the majority of people find him hilarious, but not me. It’s probably why this film’s been sitting on my Sky box for so long. It’s not Steve Carell as I know him, and for that I was grateful. Very sweet film with some funny moments.
Rating: 3/5

In the Loop May
I wish I could swear like one of the characters out of this film. I didn’t know what was going on for most of the first half of the film, but the swearing was fantastic. I got into it towards the end, and it got a few laughs out of me.
Rating: 3/5

State of Play 19/06/10
Brilliant thriller. Never saw the original BBC drama this was based on but eh. Doesn’t really matter. The film was awesome.
Rating: 4/5

Pride and Glory 19/06/10
This is the kind of film where I think everyone in it is really good but the plot just didn’t grab me. Typical dirty cops kind of film.
Rating: 2/5

The Losers 20/06/10
Fun film to watch on a Sunday afternoon. Very little brain activity needed. Brilliant bits of action – don’t need anything more!
Rating: 3/5

100 movies: Start of the summer blockbusters

Think Iron Man 2 marks the start of the summer blockbusters, am I right?

Iron Man 2 (03/05/10)
Comic book sequels have a patchy history. For every Dark Knight you’ve got a Silver Surfer. The comic book hero origin story seems to be the easiest thing to do, though taking it further is a little bit more tricky. While Iron Man 2 wasn’t as good or as well put together as the first one, it still was a very enjoyable comic book movie. A lot better than some of the ones that have been released and I think a worthy successor to the first film. There was a point during the film I was beginning to think that the movie was getting a little bit crowded – a lot of heavy hitters all wanting screen time. Think the balance was there. Robert Downey Jr and Gwyneth Paltrow are the best pieces of casting for this movie – I’ve not been a huge fan of Gwyneth pre-Iron Man (Apart from Sliding Doors) but I LOVE her as Pepper Potts! It was strange not to miss Terrence Howard as Rhodes – Don Cheadle was good! Oh and John Slattery as Howard Stark made me giggle inside more than it should have! Him and his little ‘tache.

The beginning of the film was a bit all over the place – well the middle got a bit like that, but it sorted itself out. The action sequences were awesome – just what I wanted out of them. I feel as though I need to see the first film again now.

100 movies: Action is good for the soul

I really do love my action movies. Brainless action, not so brainless, love them all. Here’s, what I think, are some good ones that I’ve seen recently:

Kick Ass (01/04/10)
It was funny going to see this at the cinema and hearing reactions from people sitting in the cinema who, presumably, had no idea about what the movie was about and the characters, other than comic book movie. Hearing the gasps and snorts of laughter when Hit Girl swore and got into action was funny. Now I haven’t read the comic book, but I do know enough about it to have expected some of the things I saw.

What I saw I absolutely loved. This will easily be in amongst my favourite movies of the year. It was just so good on all levels! I loved the action – Hit Girl’s action sequences were amazingly choreographed. Just amazing. It had plenty of funnies in it too. Plenty of giggles. But it made me cry – now I do cry at nearly anything, but there were some really touching scenes which got to me! Nicholas Cage got to do his crazy thing. Aaron Johnson was a brilliant lead and I am shocked to find out how young he is. Chloe Moretz was a big highlight of the film. Can I see the film again? Now? That was my reaction when the movie ended.

Clash of the Titans (02/04/10)
I really resent Vue Cinemas. Why? All of my local cinemas are Vue Cinemas and NONE of them were showing Titans in 2D. I knew I wanted to see this film in 2D because after Alice in Wonderland I made the decision to not see a 3D film unless it was filmed in 3D and not treated after filming. As what was done with Titans. Sadly, I wasn’t able to. Bloody Vue! Maybe I could have waited to see if they’d eventually show it in 2D, but I just really wanted to see the film. The original was a childhood favourite, even though Medussa seriously creeped me out, and well, it’s just a lot of crazy action.

I wasn’t disappointed. Well maybe with the 3D, but I was expecting that. I kept flicking my glasses off and seeing, despite a bit of blurry-ness, there was nothing different. The film itself did what I thought it would – big monsters, lots of action, Sam Worthington being pretty awesome. All boxes ticked. I wasn’t expecting anything huge in the way of a storyline. The scenes with the gods felt a little cheap. But I did learn something. Stick a beard and long hair on Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes and they look almost identical.
Rating: 3/5

Fast & Furious (02/04/10)
Right, some of you are going to look at me differently after you read what I have to say about this film. I’m sorry if you do. I like these kind of films. A vague plot line. A lot of action. Really good action score. AND LOTS of pretty cars all going really fast, or seemingly going fast, and racing and just being awesome. I liked the first FF film. The second one was a bit of a joke and I didn’t even see Tokyo Drift. Neither Vin Diesel nor Paul Walker are the best calibre of actors but they suit this genre of film. And in its category, this is a damn good film. I REALLY enjoyed it. Far more than I thought I would. It’s good fun to watch. I really wish I could drive like some of the driving that was done in this film. In a muscle car. No wait … yeah, muscle car.

About Me

My name's Jaina and this is my blog. I've written an awfully ramble-y 'About Me' page where you can read all the sordid details.

Here you'll find my random thoughts on anything I feel like blogging about, but will most likely be finding my updated list of movies I'm watching this year, as I once again try and watch at least 100 movies. Also you'll find my photos of the day.
